Ann Marie Brown made her first solo trip to Yosemite at age 22. Like many first-time visitors, she was immediately inspired by the Valley's sheer granite walls and shimmering waterfalls. Parking her car at the first trailhead she saw, she set off on the Four-Mile Trail. Two hours later she found herself at Glacier Point, considered by many to be the grandest viewpoint in the West. Scanning the scene, she noticed tourists dressed in everything from high heels to a nun's habit, and realized that she could have driven to Glacier Point instead of walking. Ann Marie vowed she'd never again go hiking without a map.

When I moved to California for graduate school in 1988 I experienced an immediate culture shock. I had never driven on a 6 lane freeway, much less come to a dead stop on one during rush hour. And where was the spectacular scenery I was so used to growing up in the Pacific Northwest? I eventually found it but it was a couple of summer jobs in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks that really captured my imagination and changed my perception of the Golden State forever. And despite having visited much more of the state, the high Sierra, forests, and canyons found in these contiguous parks are still among my favorite places to visit. If you would also like to explore the region, this new book by Tom Stienstra and Ann Marie Brown is a good place to start.

Like all titles in the Moon Outdoors "Camping & Hiking" series, this little book is a compilation of chapters from two larger outdoor reference works, California Camping by Tom Stienstra, and California Hiking by Stienstra and Ann Marie Brown. Both chapters are quite comprehensive and cover more than just the parks proper. Camping and hiking opportunities from Bass Lake, just south of Yosemite, all the way to Kern River in the southernmost Sierra receive attention in this book. Camps are rated for scenery and local recreational options. Current nightly prices are also included and readers on a budget will quickly notice there are still some free campgrounds to be had in some truly scenic locations. And what can one say about the hiking? Literally anyone can find a trail suited to their abilities among the 119 routes described here. From short hikes of less than half a mile (to the scenic Roaring River Falls, for example) to a long 112 mile one way hike along the John Muir Trail, this book includes all the places you will want to visit. I've personally hiked over 70% of the trails described and never been disappointed. And I can only think of perhaps 3-5 trails which could be added to this book.

Having said all that, readers should understand that this is not a complete recreation guide to these parks and surrounding lands in the Sierras. If you want lodging, a list of dining options, or other recreation opportunities (like fishing, which this book only touches upon) you will need to purchase a different book or books. This book is just what the title says: a guide to camping and hiking, and it is the most comprehensive of its kind. So if you are serious about your outdoor adventures, get it and enjoy.

Found an excellent remote campsite in the Sequoia National Park from this book. Also great for finding perfect hikes at any level.

Although it is my fault, I didn't realize I was ordering an OUTDOORS Moon book. I am NOT the camping type. I am someone who loves to visit nature, then go back to my hotel with running water. There is really nothing wrong with the content except that I wish moon would have made the cover maybe a noticeable different color or something. I will donate book :( Shucks!
