The geophysical meaning of gravity anomalies has been debated in the past in several geophysical and geodetic journals. This chapter picks up the approach of composing synthetically all gravity effects contributing to the gravity observed at the Earth’s surface, as this concept enables to determine exactly the physical meaning of Bouguer anomalies obtained under certain assumptions (. The chapter also tries to assess the errors, which inherently occur due to specific assumptions made in calculating the Bouguer anomaly in practice

A gravity anomaly is the difference between the observed acceleration of free fall, or gravity, on a planet's surface, and the corresponding value predicted from a model of the planet's gravity field.

A gravity anomaly is the difference between the observed acceleration of free fall, or gravity, on a planet's surface, and the corresponding value predicted from a model of the planet's gravity field. Typically the model is based on simplifying assumptions, such as that, under its self-gravitation and rotational motion, the planet assumes the figure of an ellipsoid of revolution

Examination of geophysical fields verified by super-deep wells drilling indicates that magmatic rocks of the Lesser Caucasus are extended northward under thick sedimentary cover of the Kura Depression up to the Greater Caucasus. These rocks form hidden petroleum-bearing traps of a newly identified type.

Bouguer gravity anomalies have been determined at seventy-nine stations on Alderney, Guernsey, and Jersey. On Alderney the anomalies are clearly dependent on the nature of the outcropping rock-types, and permit approximate values for the thickness of two outcropping rock masses to be obtained.
