Vilhelm Moberg: The Early Years. Hot-tempered, easily moved, and changeable was how the Swedish novelist Vilhelm Moberg once described himself. 1 He might have added that in the first half of the twentieth century he was both the most widely admired and the most deeply distrusted of all Swedish authors. A man of humble origins but immense ambition and strong opinions, Moberg spent his entire literary life championing the rights of the common people.

The Emigrants is the collective name of a series of four novels by the Swedish author Vilhelm Moberg: The Emigrants (1949). Unto a Good Land (1952). The Last Letter Home (1959). Considered one of Sweden's greatest 20th-century writers, Vilhelm Moberg created Karl Oskar and Kristina Nilsson to portray the joys and tragedies of daily life for early Swedish pioneers in America. His consistently faithful depiction of these humble people's lives is a major strength of the Emigrant Novels.Moberg's extensive research in the papers of Swedish emigrants in archival collections, including the Minnesota Historical Society, enabled him to incorporate many details of pioneer life. These editions contain introductions written by Roger McKnight, Gustavus Adolphus College, and restore Moberg's bibliography not included in earlier English editions.Book 3 focuses on Karl Oskar and Kristina as they adapt to their new homeland and struggle to survive on their new farm."It's important to have Moberg's Emigrant Novels available for another generation of readers."—Bruce Karstadt, American Swedish Institute

This is the third volume of a tetralogy (the first volume is 'The Emigrants', the second is 'Unto a Good Land', and the fourth is 'The Last Letter Home' and I'd recommend reading them in order. They are the story of a family migrating from Sweden around 1850, their life in Sweden, then their travel to Minnesota and settling there just before winter set in, then establishing a family farm in the new land. It's a case of farmers without land migrating to a land without farmers. These books are translations from the original Swedish to English, but the writing is beautiful - sometimes poetic. As a recent emigrant to Minnesota myself, I felt they were required reading!

The book did help me to better comprehend what my ancestors encountered after emigration from Sweden although I found the first two books to be more readable, faster paced and more applicable to my family. The problems of Robert and Kristina in this volume seemed to drag out and reminded me more of a soap opera. Maybe it is that my ancestors settled in the Jamestown NY area so I had trouble identifying with the issues of the mid-west. The first two books in the series were helpful to me but I do think that I will stop now and not bother with the fourth in the series.

This series has been just amazing to read. After beginning our genealogical history, I came across these books and ordered all of them. I can just feel like I'm right there with these characters and their journeys. I cannot imagine going through all the hardships they went through, and what they endured in our "roots" country of Sweden! The information written about the author is also very interesting and amazing. These books have become very dear to me. I will miss our Karl Oskar and Kristina when I'm through reading them. But now I'll have more time to finish my ancestry charting! Highly recommended series!

This has been great series. Book III spends too much time on the brother in the west. The hardships, hard work and loyalty to their new country is the story of emigrants which is well told. This should be required reading as we move further away from the day each of our family's ancestors were the emigrants!

I think this was the weakest of the three novels as it covered in great detail a relatively short period of time. But I still loved it because I was so involved with the characters that I wanted to see some resolution to things. Also, it came closer to the time that my grandparents were living this story and closer to the time that I actually experienced in Minnesota

Excellent insight into the minds and lives of settlers from Sweden. Though this is based on Swedes, I would imagine it was true of all Scandinavians making the move to America.

I bought all three volumes. I read them all in an earlier time in preparation for a trip to Sweden. I got them from the public library. Now, I want to have my own set.
Whether one is of Swedish extraction or not, if your ancestors came to America during the period of great migration from Europe, Moberg presents a wonderful picture of what it must have been like in "the old country" and the decision to start a new life in a new land. This is the third part of a four-part series. One would not get the full flavor of the book without reading the others in the series, but having the whole collection is a good plan, since it is a tale worth reading over and again.
