In the landscape of twentieth-century Italian writing, Amelia Rosselli’s poems stand out as a unique achievement, cultivating oblique, discontinuous forms that mix social diagnosis and satire, memory and introspection, tragedy and utopianism. This is a stunning book, a thoughtfully chosen cross section of Rosselli's work and an incredible translation on the part of Jen Scapatone.

Names, characters, places, and incidents are products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously and should not be construed as real. Her aching feet couldn’t get her home fast enough. If she hadn’t frolicked the day away with her friend, Emma, she’d have plenty of time to prepare the evening meal. Judging from the descending sun; she knew it must have been after 4 o’clock. As luck would have her, the sign on her father’s apothecary store read, ‘open for business.
