... but not easy reading
This is a very good compendium of several published writings from the Dutch artistic journal "De Stijl", founded in 1917 by Theo van Doesburg (pen name of C.E.M. Kupper), with the dates of the writings ranging from 1917 to 1930, the year before van Doesburg's death. Although Hans L.C. Jaffe is listed as the 'author' of this book, his contribution is limited to the informative introduction, and the great bulk of the book consists of the selected articles from "De Stijl". The article authors include van Doesburg, Piet Mondrian, and J.J.P. Oud, with single contributions from Gerrit Rietveld, Hans Richter, I.K. Bonset and Cornelis van Eesteren. The dominant voices are those of Mondrian and van Doesburg, not surprisingly, as Mondrian was the single best-known artists from the 'De Stijl' movement and van Doesburg was the editor of the journal.

Inevitably, some repetition of ideas and catchphrases (e.g. "plastic" / "plasticism") occurs, and the authors can come across as dogmatic in their pronouncements, which, in retrospect, shouldn't be surprising for an art movement that tried to change ways of looking at art and architecture, with an eye towards practical use in the real world, as in buildings. Obviously interpretation of their thinking can be enigmatic and variable depending on the individual reader's sympathies.

Jaffe was the leading scholar of De Stijl in his day, and that knowledge shows in his introduction. Even though his contribution as the book's "author" is just his introduction, it is informative, and he was wise enough to stand back and let the contributors to that movement speak for themselves. If you can track down this book and are interested in De Stijl, this makes a good introduction to their thinking.
