Hank was a late war replacement in 3rd Platoon who endured the horrendous conditions of Bastogne as well as Hagenau. He was present for duty during the Rhineland Campaign where Easy took up positions in Germany and Austria. He was never without a smile and his quit wit is greatly missed. He was an excellent shot and he and Shifty Powers were the only expert marksmen in the company. He was assigned to 3rd Platoon where he later became a NCO and squad leader. He was part of the group of NCOs who offered to give up their stripes rather than have Sobel lead them into combat.

Corporal Forrest Guth is the fourth book published by Michel DeTrez, and the first volume in a WWII paratrooper portrait series titled The Way We Were. With the help of these photographs and Guth’s recollections it has been possible to retrace the route he took from the place he was misdropped near Utah Beach, until he reached Easy on the outskirts of Carentan. Guth’s story is retold through many photographs, pieces of his original uniform and equipment and his personal recollections.
