Originally from Hungary, he has lived in the United Kingdom for most of his life after coming to the country as a refugee at the age of eight. Szirtes was a judge for the 2017 Griffin Poetry Prize.

Szirtes is a skilled poet with strong visual sense. He exhibits flashes of dark, playful humor.

George Szirtes’ imagination glances off Magda’s camp experience; there is simply too much hurt and pain for that time to be fully countenanced. What’s more, those events constrict her life in ways that deform its broader arc. What he does do is linger, beautifully, on her slow return to health

Source for information on Szirtes, George: Contemporary Poets dictionary. His book The Slant Door is lulled by a dreamy resonance that occasionally overpowers the syntax and structure of the verse. These I called "the possibility of happiness" and "apprehension of disaster. Its surrealist tone is never obtrusive, though it can be surprising, as in "The Bird Cage, 1851," in which a genre scene of a girl stooping to kiss and pout at a caged bird in a conservatory becomes an image of immanent menace

On July 31, 1975 – in the midst of an hot English summer – Magda Szirtes, a Jewish Hungarian survivor of World War II, took an overdose in her North London home. The ambulance dispatched to revive her was delayed by a minor traffic accident on the way, and she died.
