The human reality of the rural northeast is very much present in his novels and short stories, as well as in some of his poetry, which at the same time could not be farther removed from the stereotypes of regionalist literature.

António Manuel da Fonseca (27 September 1796, Lisbon - 4 October 1890, Lisbon) was a Portuguese painter, illustrator and theatrical designer; best known for his mythological and historical scenes. His first studies were with his father, João Tomás da Fonseca, who was a painter and sculptor. He then worked at the "Aula de Desenho e de Figura e História", founded by Joaquim Manuel da Rocha (1727-1786).
