Robert P. Davis's The Pilot is a story of an individual who almost has all in life. A successful airline Captain whose marriage was unsuccessful and who has to struggle with drinking habits BUT during flying. Cliff Robertson was playing back in the 1980's the character of Mike Hagan, the airline pilot, a movie which no too many have watched and that has never been released as a digital copy on a DVD or on a Bluray. A great story that must be read, especially by aviation enthusiasts.

What will surprise many is that this is the basis for the Denzel Washington Movie "Flight." Almost to the letter of detail, including a flight attendant being crushed by a galley coming loose and the main character hiding booze in hidden compartments on board. No credit was ever given to Robert P Davis, nor mention made whatsoever concerning this obvious act of plagiarism against Davis, in the films background info, credits, etc. Until maybe perhaps here.

Robert P. Davis' THE PILOT may be classified as a pulp novel, but it is a superbly informed account of an alcoholic pilot, with an emphasis on "pilot." It is full of convincing detail about what it is like to fly as a professional (the protagonist is a pilot of DC-8s who started his career as a crop-duster). If the reader is at all interested in flying techniques, weather, and the drama of the cockpit, this is a great read. Certainly one of the best books about flying I have ever read.
