Hetch Hetchy and its Dam Railroad. A superb summary with great pics of the building of Hetch-hetchy dam and railroad and water system to the city.

The Hetch Hetchy Railroad (HHRR) was a 68-mile (109 km) standard gauge Class III railroad constructed by the City of San Francisco to support the construction and expansion of the O'Shaughnessy Dam across Hetch Hetchy Valley. Based in Groveland, the HHRR operated from 1917 to 1949. It primarily carried construction crews and materials, but also took excursion passengers, freight, and mail

For any railroad or history buff, this book is the BOMB, especially if you live in San Francisco or middle CA!

MANY pictures of how near the turn-of-the-century, some far-sighted engineers and planners financed and developed a water system to provide for a major city with a ONE HUNDRED YEAR PLAN for future expansion!!??? (Think about that....public project, 100 year scope...!)

Train pictures, historic pictures, railroad history. Worth any price. Was out of print for a while but now is back.

Funny note....There has been a cadre or environmentalist who want to completely dismantle this amazing project to "reclaim" the Hetch Hetchy watershed and put San Francisco back into the water stone age for aesthetic reasons. Read this book and you will see the fallacy of this proposition!

In more recent years, I worked on Hetch Hetchy projects...so this book is an excellent resource for engineers, or others who love the area and are interested in how the San Francisco water systems came to be...the system still works virtually as designed...the hydroelectric power plants are a great source of green energy. The book has fantastic photos of the entire project as it was developed.

The quintessential book on the subject.
