Today's picture book is The Chicken Book by Garth Williams, first published in 1946. This makes The Chicken Book an example of literature which emerged between the first and second golden ages of children’s literature, when the publishing industry very much took a back seat to other world events. Namely, Garth Williams wrote and illustrated The Chicken Book at the end of the second World War. The ideology of this story is more typical of the pre-war period. Child characters from the first golden age were self-sufficient, free-range and healthy and robust.

Original colour painting by Garth Williams which depicts the well-known cover illustration of the Chicken in full. The artwork is pasted to the original artist's matt, with all measurement marks and notations as expected. Unfortunately, the work has a couple spots where it has also been taped at the edges to the matt for additional support (tape, the eternal enemy of book-lovers and art-lovers alike).

I could not believe it when I received this copy of the book. Absolutely terribly done. I loved this out-of-print story as a child and had been looking for it for a long time, and I could not believe I'd found a new copy at such a great price. Well, folks, there's a reason for it.

First of all, be forewarned that the cover image shown here -- the basic brown cover w/text -- is the actual cover of the book. It is not a stock image. I could deal with that if the interior had been good quality, but it's not. Second, the title page text was offset/double printed and was completely illegible. Third, the "publishers" basically photocopied the original pages of the book and bound it into this new tome. That wouldn't be such a bad thing, I suppose, except that the original book was done in a landscape layout, and this book is in portrait layout -- so what you end up with is a lot of white space on the top and bottom of each page as they tried to shrink the illustrations to fit the space. The images are so small, and the font of the story along with it, that it's completely useless to enjoy or read to a child. Lastly, the paper that this was printed on so extremely thin and would not hold up to repeat readings. This is something I wanted to share with my son, and I was so disgusted by this copy that I returned it.

You cannot call something a "reprint" if you completely change the format of the book in such a way that it can't be read or enjoyed. I have never posted photos in a review before, but was so appalled that I am sharing some here so that you can see for yourself. The people I showed this to could not believe it. Amazon, I suggest you remove this from your catalog. Potential buyers, I suggest searching for a used copy instead of this junk.

This was my absolute favorite book when I was a little girl. I just adore the rhyme! And the illustrations are wonderful. I always get this book for my friends with children as a gift to start their child's library!

This is a very simple book that charms my children. I love that it takes so little time to read, but there are so many details in the pictures to discuss. I read it again today to my son. It is definitely one to keep on the shelf in easy reach.

The Chicken Book is a beautifully illustrated classic tale of animal mothers and babies, in this case, chickens on the farm. Children and babies of all ages find this book captivating, both for the pastoral beauty of the full color watercolors as well as the simple, succinct text.

Little ones love identifying the butterflies, bumblebees, ponds, barns, cows, horses, plows and haystacks, hens and chicks, worms, et cetera, in this wonderful book. Toddlers will enjoy the text. Even Dads seem to enjoy reading this one to the kids.

Buy in hardcover, as you'll want to save this one for the grandchildren. A perfect baby gift for enlightened parents who read to their children from Day One. Can be hard to find at times and may be out of print.

A timeless treasure!
