Created in 1939 the 31st FG's early combat missions were flown with Spitfires, first with the 8th AF in England and then with the 12th in the MTO. Switching to P-51s in March 1944 the Group ended the war with 570 1/2 air kills, winning a DUC in the process. Group aces included John Voll, Sandy McCorkle, Sam Brown, Bob Goebel, Walt Goehausen and Frank Hill.
