Much is written about food plots for wildlife, both in magazines and ad copy. The printed advertising would have you believe that you simply kick leaves out of the way, throw some seed on the ground, and return a few weeks later to wade your way through the animals enjoying your vast bounty of protein-rich and irresistible forage.
This book is a wonderfully pragmatic and organized volume that approaches each step of food plot design and construction with plain language and just the right amount if detail. Seed selection, implement selection, shape design, and many other variables are clearly and effectively outlined by the authors. I have used this book extensively and perhaps the greatest compliment I can give is that mine is now dog-eared and adorned with highlighter as I've found it valuable to refresh or mark sections periodically.
If you are new, or even a 'moderate' food plot builder, there's information in this book to help you reach your goals and afford the many pitfalls that will cost much more than this book.

This book is an excellent how to guide on habitat management for whitetail deer.

The book is an excellent guide for beginners. The book covers a several topics on improving whitetail habitat on your land. The book discusses property evaluation, using a chainsaw to improve cover and browse, the importance of access to the property and the food plots, logging, creating food plots, and several other minor topics. The authors cover each one of the subjects in thorough detail. For people who cannot afford ATV's and/or tractors to build food plots, the chainsaw chapter is excellent; the chapter discusses how to clear trees to grow deer browse and how to use the "waste" to funnel deer movements. The deep plot chapters discuss the best plants to use in the northern United States, and how (including what shape) to construct food plots. The book is not filled with theory, but rather the real world experience of the authors. The authors' experience shows as the book is also filled with tips and things to avoid.

On the flip side, much of the food plot information is basic. Having read numerous articles about food plots on the internet prior to purchasing this book, the food plot section was a lot of review. The book also seems to be an advertisement for BioLogic products (the authors Center is a test area for BioLogic, so I am not sure if they truly think BioLogic is the best or if they just do not have experience with other brands). I would have liked to see a section on growing food plots with no or with minimal equipment. While reading the section on food plots, I got the feeling that the authors assume the readers will have access to $5,000 + worth of equipment.

This book is filled with information that is useful people who are interested in habitat management for whitetail deer. While I have not had the chance to practice any of the techniques described, everything in the book seems easy to understand. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to improve the habitat on his or her land. While some of the information can be found on the internet, but the book is still definitely worth reading to learn from the authors' experience.

I have read all of Neil's books and walked three properties with him personally during several of his land consultations. Similar to what others have posted, the book lacks detail and does not pertain to smaller land plots IMO. You can sum up his main themes in about five minutes: plant food, create cover, have a sanctuary or two, avoid walking on your property pre season, and prosecute trespassers.
What he doesn't cover is how the smaller acreage landowner can achieve this while at the same time maintaining a property that a whole family can enjoy (i.e family hiking, nature walks, enjoying the serenity of the woods, etc). It is absolutely not realistic to buy a piece of land just for hunting, trash the woods with hinge cutting, TSI, etc. as most folks have multi purposes for their land
I'm still waiting for a book that covers "How to Create a Perfect Deer Woods While at the Same Time Maintaining the Beauty and Enjoyment of Your Woods" but it doesn't exist.

This is the third one of these I've bought. I keep loaning them and never get them back. That's okay though, I've opened the eyes of a couple of friends to habitat management and how that influences deer movement and in turn improves the quality of the hunting experience.
Neil & Craig Dougherty have been at the forefront of the quality deer management movement and this book is an excellent resource. Whether you own 20 acres or 2000 acres. This book will save you a lot of time and money. A+.

The book is around 230 pages but when you exclude the numerious half page pictures and countless full page pics of beautiful deer its easy to knock out in 4 hours just like the tour it is designed to narrate. There are also countless plugs for BioLogic products. I guess when you get your land paid for by corperate sponsor shameless plug are part of the game.
I felt the book lacked substance and detail. There is enough info to draw you into a chapter and out line minimal steps that a beginner needs to take but then the chapter is over. More detail goes into chainsaw safety and tresspassing than habitat creation and large destination food plots. I did like some of the discription of the hunting plots but you can tell that the authors have lost touch with the realistic goals of the do it yourself'er with the inability or maybe the desire to not use heavy equipment. Even though I don't know many who wouldn't turn down the chance to do some dirt work with a dozer where I hunt its just not possible.
I think there are a few things I'll re-read and maybe a thing or two that I'll dive farther into but I wanted more detail.
