Harry Blamires (6 November 1916 − 21 November 2017) was an Anglican theologian, literary critic, and novelist. Blamires was once head of the English department at King Alfred's College (now University of Winchester) in Winchester, England. He started writing in the late 1940s at the encouragement of his friend and mentor C. S. Lewis, who had been his tutor at Oxford University, where he graduated from University College.

On Christian truth book. Harry Blamires is a highly respected teacher and author of more than thirty books. He has won a wide following of both British and American readers for his provocative works in theology, education, English literature and fiction. Well known for his classic book, The Christian Mind, his more recent writings include The Post-Christian Mind and New Town.

The obituary of Harry Blamires recently printed in the Times newspaper came as a shock. Harry Blamires considered it a badge of honour when he was booed off stage by theology students at the University of Kent in the mid-1960s. Not having heard of this writer for years, one assumed he had long passed away, but through he columns of this daily newspaper one learned that he had recently died, 21 November, aged 101 years and 15 days. With his fogeyish attire and his unreconstructed belief that the Church of England would be doomed if it tried to modernise, he made no concessions to the sensibilities of redbrick universities.

On Christian Truth is a book for Christians seeking a deeper understanding of their faith. This was one of three texts used in the course, and was an outstanding work. Harry Blamires, we were informed, would often do public square appearances where he would welcome open dialogue about Catholic apologetics. This piqued our interest in what he had to say, and this book said it well. It was neatly organized, and used a common sense approach to make his points, and not lofty, hard-to-digest theological text. He obviously tried to capture how he would speak to those he engaged in discussion!

To Blamires, Jesus is not some spongy source of giddy joy. He is the Christ-the hope of 'hard boiled' secularity.

I studied "Apologetics (defense of the faith)" as part of my coursework for a Masters degree in Christian Ministry and Renewal in the mid 1980s. This was one of three texts used in the course, and was an outstanding work. Harry Blamires, we were informed, would often do public square appearances where he would welcome open dialogue about Catholic apologetics. It was neatly organized, and used a common sense approach to make his points, and not lofty, hard-to-digest theological text. He obviously tried to capture how he would speak to those he engaged in discussion! The book contains such issues as: does God exist, the role of the Church, the role of Mary, and more. A few years ago, a neighbor's son, who was a student at the University of Georgia, had to do a book report on defending the existence of God, and asked me if I had a book he could use. I loaned him this text, and he used Harry Blamires' arguments to the max -- and "Aced" the report! For other similar texts, you might read: "Catholic and Christian," by Dr. Alan Schreck, and "Theology for Beginners," by Frank Sheed.
