When I look at The Forbes 400, the billionaire and the celebrity rich lists, I wonder how many of the people on them are actually happy. He or she should always be careful when devising a business strategy or entering a new product field to study the moral implications with at least as much attention as is paid to the legal and regulatory implications. Of course, it is desirable, to my mind, that all business activities be rooted in Judeo-Christian teaching, both theoretical and practical, or conform to a morally defensible framework of principles.

In Careful Enough?, a Christian fiction by Dillon Forbes, God calls Daniel’s parents to move to China, where missionaries are illegal, and establish a house church. Daniel has a choice: stay in America for his last year of high school or spend ten months in a country where he can say only the word "Christian" to trusted friends. Once in China, Daniel discovers that there is a fine line between being cautious and being ashamed of his faith and between disobeying man’s law and upholding God’s commands.

Daniel and his family moved to China to be English teachers. Well, not really. In reality, they came to be missionaries, but the Chinese government does not allow that. They even tried to refrain from using the m-word. Daniel was eager to help, but found out how hard it is to find the balance between being careful and being ashamed. God used a series of circumstances to help him understand what he needed to do.

I really enjoyed this book. It took a chapter or two for me to really get into it, but then I had a hard time putting it down. While it is a fictional story, the author took great care in being authentic to Chinese culture. I began to understand the daily struggles of missionaries in China. It also showed the difficulties of simply switching cultures. Americans and Chinese people have such different ways they look at the world. I can understand why this transition would be really hard.

I like Careful Enough because it captures so much of what it is like to be a foreigner in China. Having been an American teacher in China for two years, I find myself relating to Daniel's experiences again and again. The author weaves in many details about China- city life, country life, food, culture, etc. As a Christian, I appreciate the insight the author brings to Daniel's struggles living out his faith in a context that seems uncomfortable and dangerous. Chuck's explanation of his reason for staying in China hits the mark. If you've been to China, Careful Enough is a wonderful way to relive the experience; if you haven't, it will make you want to go!

I was excited to have received this book at a conference I recently attended. Both my daughter (age 12) and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a missionary kid myself, I could relate to some of the uncomfortable situations in which Daniel found himself. I felt like I was right there feeling what he was feeling. God has been continually increasing my burden for the salvation of the Chinese people and this book intensified that burden. I thougt the plot was very intriguing, and I thoroughly recommend it.
