Fourteen-year-old Prue and her sister Grace have been educated at home by their controlling, super-strict father all their lives

Floss's parents are divorced, and she divides up her week, spending five days with her mum, her new stepdad and her baby half-brother. The other two days Floss spends with her dad, helping him to run his greasy spoon cafe. Fourteen-year-old Prue and her sister Grace have been educated at home by their controlling, super-strict father all their lives. Forced to wear Mum's odd hand-made garments and forbidden from reading teenage magazines, they know they're very different to 'normal' girls - but when Dad has a stroke and ends up in hospital, unable to move or speak, Prue suddenly discovers what it's like to have a little freedom.

Nick Sharratt's fabulously funny début novel, THE CAT AND THE KING .

Nick Sharratt's fabulously funny début novel, THE CAT AND THE KING, tells the story of a gentle, unworldly King and his very clever cat, and is illustrated throughout in two colours with Nick's irresistible wit and humour. The cat and the King must find a new home after their castle burns down in an Unfortunate Incident with a dragon. We have had dozens of Sharratt's picture books and collaborations over the years, and he has made an excellent move into the next age bracket with this debut 'novel'. The Cat is a patient and loyal friend.

I hate all the teachers. I hate all the girls. I particularly hate Maria and Alice. They raise their eyebrows and then sputter with laughter whenever I go near them. The other girls have started. doing it too. And everyone groans whenever I answer in class. I can’t help knowing lots. What’s so bad about being clever? I wish I didn’t have to go to school. I got into trouble because of my darling Anne today. I was so excited because we’re doing Diaries in English and Mrs Gibbs started.
